The Woman's Christian Temperance Union has announced that it will hold its full compliment of contests in 2009.
Formats, eligibility and rules remain similar to contests of prior years with a few exceptions, most notable being new and additional category for the National Poster Contest (see below). In addition to awards at the local and state level, prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place participants in each division of each of the four national contests. A total of more than $3,000 in national awards will be given in 2009.
With participants from kindergarten to college, WCTU Picture Coloring, Essay, Poster and Oratorical Contests have proven an effective way of engaging children and
youth and educating them regarding the benefits of abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Following are brief descriptions of the four contests. Full copies of the rules may be downloaded here or copies of rules booklets may be obtained from
Signal Press on request.
This contest offers primary school-age children in Kindergarten and Grades 1-3 an opportunity to

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union believes that
young people should be aware of the problems involved with the use
of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, illegal drugs and pornography. To
encourage and promote research into the effects of these as they
relate to the health and happiness of the individual, the protection of
the home, safety, crime and violence, college students are invited to
compete in the Intercollegiate Oratorical Contests sponsored by
the WCTU on campuses around the nation.
Preliminary contests will be held with the location
and dates of preliminary contests announced after consultation with
participating educational institutions. Generally, preliminary contests
will start about March 1st. Each participating state organization is free
to set the time and duration of the state contest as long as all entries
are completed and submitted no later than the contest deadlines below. Awards shall
be given to first, second and third place contestants. Honorable
Mention awards may be given at the judges' discretion.
Contest Deadlines:
State Contest – June 25th. State contests must be completed and
winners chosen by this date. State Contest rules and judging criteria
must comply with the National WCTU Contest rules and judging
guidelines.
National Contest – August - The winning state contest competitor, or
runner up if the winner is unable to attend, will compete in the
National Contest which is held in conjunction with the annual
Convention of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
(The Convention location varies from year-to-year)
Three prizes, ranging from $300 to $500 will be awarded at the national level (for a single division). State and local awards are given at the discretion of the sponsoring organizations.

Don't forget awards for winners and participants in our WCTU Contests. Children want and need recognition for a job well done. Signal Press
offers a full selection of award ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places as well as Honorable Mention and Participant. All ribbons are 1-5/8 X 6 inches as pictured above with gold imprint showing place and "WCTU Contest."
NOTE: Many members have suggested doing away with the adhesive strip at the top of the ribbons. We hear you - after present supplies are exhausted, ribbons will be supplied "plain."
To make award ribbons easier (and less expensive) to buy and award, we've lowered the price for larger quantities while still keeping the single ribbon price the same as it was in 1999.
Pricing will be based on the total number of ribbons ordered and you may now order any quantity of any ribbon - no need to order sets, unless it's more convenient for you. Here's the new pricing - note the new catalog numbers.
Order by e-mail: orders@signalpress.org.

Our ribbon vendor now has Emerald Green available as a fabric color. This seems a "stronger" color than the green we have been using (see above). Let us know if you'd like to see
future "Participant" ribbons in the new color - e-mail Bob by clicking on the graphic above or here: bob@signalpress.org.
